Before starting University, I nabbed myself a part time job working at a fragrance counter in my hometown. It was weekend-only-work, and launching into a world of cosmetics was about as far away as you can get from anything that I had done before.

I was a pretty sheltered kid, I didn’t know much about beauty, skincare or colognes – and being assigned a wall of 50 different brands to advertise, sell and recommend to customers was something so daunting that I spent the first month flustered when even trying to keep up a conversation with them.

Which was the best floral scent? What about the musk – was it overpowering? How long did each last? Had any been watered down? What’s the difference between Toilette, Eau de Parfum and Parfum? I didn’t know – I wanted to know, but I didn’t. And having such a steep learning curve while I had already committed my life to school and education in topics that were about as far away from the world of fragrances that you could get meant I didn’t have a whole lot of time to brush up my knowledge on them.

Why am I telling you this? Well. Since then, I’m happy to say I pretty much know my way around a fragrance or two now. I worked on that counter for three whole years before quitting to take my first full-time job in the city following Uni, where I work now as a cameraman and film editor for a production company.

And although they flew past in a blink of an eye, those three years were pretty fantastic. Sundays spent rushing around the shop floor, grabbing out-of-stock promotional gifts, extra sale bottles and leaving a trail of mess in my wake. I can’t imagine what the managers felt like having me as an employee!

I’m so happy I spent those long weekends behind that counter because I got to test and try all sorts of products, from the best summer scents to the cosy winter ones. And during that, I managed to find the fragrances that I became obsessed with – and still swear by to this day. (It also meant everybody I knew received some sort of fragrance for their birthday’s/Christmases because staff discount was a blessing and a half!)

My go-to is Chanel’s Bleu. It’s fantastic – fresh and fruity, with Chanel’s iconic musk in the background. It’s a great all-rounder for days with clients, or evenings out on the town. I honestly can’t recommend it enough! Another great scent by Chanel is their Allure range. I love their Edition Blanche, while Scott wears Allure: Sport. Valentino’s Uomo is a great one, too. It smells almost like parma violets – but sexy. Ha!

  • What a great experience it must have to be exposed with so many scents. My go to scent since high school is Narciso Rodriguez for her.

What an experience – working behind a fragrance counter! You must be an expert at all the scents. It’s a struggle to pick between musky and fruity. I think I like both (obviously not at the same time, but worn separately for different occasions). 80% is an amazing deal, too. Thanks for the heads up!

I also did a stint at a fragrance counter while at uni and found by the end of the day I’d always reek because I couldn’t help testing them all haha. Bleu is my fave male fragrance by far, and I’m a huge fan of Chance for myself!
